Honolulu-based Hawaii Oceanic Technology, Incorporated has withdrawn its permit application for a 12-cage submerged ahi farm offshore of Malae Point, North Kohala. The company will see permission for only one cage. CEO Bill Spenser told the “Hawaii Tribune-Herald” that “we/ve amended our application to reflect the fact that we are phasing in our deployment process.” Spencer says once the initial cage is installed the company will be better able to address concerns about the project.
Twelve of the world’s elite cliff divers will take the plunge off an 85-foot high platform on Sunday, September 12th, at Kawainui Falls near Pepeekeo. The event is the sixth and final competition of the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2010 and the only U.S. stop on the tour. According to the “Hawaii Tribune-Herald”, English diver Gary Hunt has already won the series and will be crowned the overall champion following the event at Kawainui Falls.
(AP). The Army says a Big Island wildfire that started las month along Saddle Road near the Pohkuloa Training Area is about 80 percent contained. Officials at U.S. Army Garrison, Hawaii say mop-up operations of monitoring for hot spots and underground smoldering are expected to continue for several days. They estimate the fire has burned nearly 1,400 acres since it began August 22nd.
(AP). Hawaii surfer Andy Irons has won the Bilabong Pro Tahiti. He bested fellow American C. J. Hobgood Friday in 3-to-4 foot waves at Teahupoo.
Prep football scores (Friday): Ka’u defeated Konawaena, 12-0, to win its first football game in more than a decade. In other games, Skyline defeated Kealakehe 30-16.
A Hilo Grand Jury has indicted a Waimea man for allegedly possessing stolen Native Hawaiian artifacts belonging to a South Kohala luxury resort hotel. According to the “Hawaii Tribune-Herald”, the indictment charges Jay Brewer with first-degree theft, with the stolen items worth more than $20,000. Prosecutors say the pieces were taken from the Laurance Rockefeller collection at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel.
The Rotary Club of Hilo recently presented equipment to the Digital Media Program at Connections School to enable the schoo’s Digital Media students and their teacher Nance DeRego to participate in PBS Hawaii’s “Hiki No” student news network. Rotarian Susan Munro says the gift will help Nacny accomplish her digital storytelling project, which involves students interviewing kupuna from all Big Island districts. The students will help preserve the stories of an older generation and a way of life.
The HU-Hilo College of Pharmacy will begin new health care initiatives in Hawaii and the Pacific region thanks to a $1.5 million congressionally-directed grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Dr. John M. Hawaii County police arrested three persons on Thursday in connection with a stolen jeep. The jeep was taken from downtown Hilo on August 9th. Officers arrested Aachary Kamakahui of Hilo, Mac Leroy Nobriga of Hilo, and Andrea Wright of Hilo in Honalo around 5 a.m. Nobriga and Wright were released pending further investigation.
The Hawaii Police Department will hold a community meeting on Thursday, September 16th, from 12 noon to 2 p.m., at the North Kohala Intergovernmental Center located at Kamehameha Park in Kapa’au. The purpose of the meeting is to allow the public to meet the Police Department’s command staff and to discuss concerns with the police chief and commanders who oversee police operations in the North Kohala District.
